Private investigators do far more than sit in a car all day, hoping for a breakthrough or successfully pursuing their subject. They meticulously gather pertinent information but also analyze the minuscule details and deliver their findings back to the client in a clear, organized report. Undoubtedly, conducting interviews, collecting evidence, and administering surveillance techniques are integral aspects of the profession. However, the pivotal role of an investigative analyst comes into play when the investigation concludes, ensuring all the facts are laid out for the client to read easily and efficiently.
As an investigation comes to an end, a detailed report is compiled documenting the sequence of events that took place on a day-to-day basis. It is insufficient to merely inform the client of the investigation’s success or failure. Drafting reports ensure our credibility of evidence and findings. Precision is paramount, down to the approximate timeframes for calls, text messages, or visits to residences. Including photographs in our report not only demonstrates reliability but also fosters trust with the client. Our reports are aimed to provide unbiased accounts of the investigation’s conclusion in an organized and structured manner.
Upon completing the report, a second set of eyes meticulously reviews and examines it. Was the investigation successful? Did our efforts align with the assignment? Have we exhausted all available options? These are just a handful of questions an investigative analyst will ask themselves as they are proofreading reports. Oftentimes, we spot the smallest oversights no one else was able to see, down to extra space between sentences, a missing photo from a visit, or a font size one too small.
Investigative analysts are unique in that they are one of the few positions that dip their toes into every type of investigation. From surveillance and background checks to locating individuals and heir investigations, we possess a deep understanding of how each report should be written and formatted. While most departments have their one sole focus, we adapt to multiple disciplines – a true jack-of-all-trades. Our knowledge is vast, expansive, and demanding; not for the faint of heart. Our job requires 120% effort and unwavering focus at all times. After all, sometimes the tiniest of details make the biggest difference, and only the most exemplary reports are delivered to the client.
The role of investigative analysts often remains obscure, with many unaware our role even exists. We serve as the stagehands of investigations, toiling behind the scenes tirelessly to make certain the show goes on.
